If you are having trouble with an old suction cleaner, Here are some troubleshooting tips:
Remove the cleaner from the pool. Check the diaphragm for any tears, and check that the diaphragm has not stretched. To check the diaphragm, hold the cleaner upright and drop a $2 coin into the pipe. If the $2 coin drops out the other side without any shaking or prodding then the diaphragm has stretched and needs to be replaced.
Adjust your suction using the valve in the skimmer box. If the suction is too low the cleaner will not move. Water will simply pass though it, and no damage will occur. If the suction is too high, the cleaner may get stuck in places and the diaphragm will stretch.
If this does not solve your issue, please let us know and we can assist with other troubleshooting steps.
