Your pool pump draws in water to be filtered and circulated through your skimmer boxes. Along with water, it also draws in floating debris, which is why skimmer baskets are super important. Skimmer baskets trap larger pieces of debris so that they won’t cause pipe clogs or damage your pool pump’s impellers.
Empty your skimmer baskets at least once a week to prevent damage to them and to relieve the stress on your pool pump as well. A full skimmer basket can cause debris to bulge and crack the basket or cause debris to get pushed through. If you spot any cracking or missing “grills” on your skimmer baskets, replace them immediately.
If you have a clog in between your skimmer box and your pool pump due to debris slipping through your skimmer basket, we have a guide on how to deal with that exact situation which you can read here on our post on how to unclog your pool lines.
To add an extra layer of protection for your skimmer baskets, you might want to use some Water TechniX Mega Skimmer Socks, they catch almost anything that falls into your skimmer baskets and each piece is reusable for up to six weeks! They can also serve as a band-aid solution for cracked skimmer baskets, but it’s still best to replace damaged ones when you have the chance.
